London Skyline
Free art and Filmmaking workshops

This spring 2012, a series of free creative, educational workshops is being offered to primary and secondary schools in Camden, exploring air quality issues including the impacts on health and climate change.

The workshops are linked to the National Curriculum and can be delivered during lesson time or after school clubs.

We can offer primary and secondary schools:

ART WORKSHOPS

Two air quality and art workshops for ten schools for classes of up 30 children.

Educational and fun, these will give children opportunities to:

  • learn how air quality affects them
  • find out how they can make a difference
  • express their ideas through 2D and 3D art including shadow animation, willow sculpture and temporary installations.

FILMMAKING WORKSHOPS:

A series of seven air quality film making workshops for two schools for groups of up to 20 children.

Participants will:

  • learn to devise, shoot and edit short films
  • incorporate artwork from previous workshops
  • tell Camden’s air quality story in exciting, imaginative ways

The short films will become a resource for other schools and a selection of all work will be displayed on a dedicated webpage.

We welcome collaboration with school science teachers prior to the workshops however, they can also be delivered as stand-alone activities. Sessions will be led by experienced, skilled tutors with all materials and equipment provided.

Wokshops will focus on two main themes:

1. Air quality and climate change:

Which greenhouse gases and particles affect climate change the most?

  • Where do they come from?
  • How can we reduce them?
  • What is being already done to do this?
  • What could happen if we don’t?

2. Air quality, schools and children’s health:

The school run:

  • Calculate emissions for each child on the school run
  • Estimate how many emissions the whole school community produces per day and over a year.
  • Examine the effects of idling at school gates
  • Identify impacts of the school’s travel plans

Air quality and health statistics in Camden:

  • Which gases and particles affect our health and how?
  • Air quality and children’s health
  • How could we contribute to better quality air?
  • How many trees there are in close proximity including nearby parks and ask how much do they contribute to cleaner air?
